| My name is Laura Cherry, from Northern Ireland,I am seeking information however sparse with regard to my late father.
My late father, Robert John Robinson (Bobbie) began his naval career at the age of 19 yrs as an Ordinary Signalman. In 1941 he was sent to the Flower Class Corvette, HMS Fritillary, completed at Harland and Wolff’s Shipyard Belfast. My father was onboard the ship during her work up trials at Tobermorey. On Dec 1st 1941 he departed the UK in HMS Fritillary bound for the South Atlantic.
HMS Fritillary arrived in Freetown, Sierra Leone on 21st Dec and spent most of January and February 1942 escorting convoys from Freetown and Bathurst. In early March she was sent with her sister ship HMS Freesia to Simonstown in South Africa. From there Fritillary went to Durban and then onto Diego Suarez. After a brief spell she returned to Durban, but was then reassigned from the South Atlantic Command to the Eastern Fleet.
With the Eastern Fleet, HMS Fritillary initially based at Kilindini (now Mombasa) where my father was given a temp promotion to Yeoman of Signals towards the end of October. Meanwhile HMS Fritillary was sent with the 'Isles' Class Trawler HMS Hoxa, to search for a suspected Japanese Submarine close to Addu Atoll and during November she was involved in anti-submarine searches off the Seychelles.
In Dec 1942, Fritillary was once more assigned to the South Atlantic Command and spent her time escorting convoys between Durban and Cape Town. In July 1943, while Fritillary continued to plough the seas between Durban and Cape Town my father was given a post ashore as Temp Acting Leading Signalman at HMS GNU naval base at Cape Town. From there he joined HMS Lochailort Combined Operations Base and School for Boat Officers at Inverailort Castle near Inverness, where he trained to become a commissioned officer (Temporary Acting Sub Lieutenant RNVR) . In 1943 my father was assigned to LCI(L)382 Landing craft awaiting D-Day (Operation Overlord). He returned to civilian life in 1946.This information was forwarded to me from the Royal Naval records at my request.
I am hoping for information from someone who can remember Bobbie. His other assignment ships are posted on the ( RNVR Officers 1939/1945) web-site under The British Flag, then under initial (R) Robert John Robinson.
His other ships picked up survivors from HM Sloops, Folkstone, Londonderry, Wellington/ HM Cutters,Sennen, Totland. HMS Royal Archer/ Confield/Cingalese Prince/ Brunswick / Athel Princess. I would be grateful if anyone can give me any information whatsoever. or someone who was onboard a corvette could give me a summary of what daily life at sea was like during those dreadful times.
This information is for a family portfolio to honour my father’s memory.
Thanking you sincerely, Laura Cherry. e.mail cherrylaura@hotmail.co.uk

| Just wanted you to know that my Father, Herbert Dawson, who was a naval submariner from 1952 to 1964 aged 16 when he joined and is on the very last few moments of his life.
He was based out of Portsmouth; Tiptoe and a number of other submarines. Started off as periscope boy and ended his carreer as an engineer with years of V.G. sups. Saw action at Aden and loved his time in the Navy; just short of 12 years, I believe. He never really talked too much about his Naval years because of the secrecy act but we always got the feeling it was the best part of his life. Did talk of tours in Malta, Australia and Turkey.
Anyway, if there are any of his collegues that served with "Bert" around 1952 to 1964, he wants you all to know that he had a great time with you.
From his son

| I wrote earlier this month regarding trying to find information about Alfred Marks Hobbs.
He served during WW11 and stayed friends after the war with a shipmate called Johnny Cough(we donot know if that is the right spelling of the surname). These two apparently were inseperable they came from the fulham Hammersmith area of London and stayed friends until Johnny went to live in Australia.
If anyone can give information to my wife please email us.
