Hi There,

I am trying to trace an ex-RN buddy of mine called "Bambi" Greaves. We served together in Hong Kong up until the handover in 1997. Bambi was a catering WO working at HMS Tamar. We were both members of the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club and members of the same Mess. Even though I am an ex-PONGO, Bambi and I were great mates, but I have lost contact with him since leaving the Army and retiring to Canada.
I believe "Bambi" came from the Hampshire area and may have settled there. He would almost certainly be retired by now I imagine. I think his first name might have been Gareth, but couldn't swear it it since everybody called him Bambi. He was a very fit WO with balding blonde hair and a huge grin.
I know this isn't much to to go on, but would be grateful if any of your members may have heard of Bambi and could pass on my details to him.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

He was a petty officer. I know nothing else other than he was in Venice and Rome at some point. I have some photos.

15th December 1958 H.M.S.Alert was re commissioned. 15th December 2008 12 old ship mates marked the event with a pre Christmas Dinner. If any 1 out there served with us, we would like to hear from you. Surely we are not the sole survivers.

Hi, My dad, JOHN (Jack) SALMON, served on HMS RODNEY in WW2. Amongst other things, my dad was a STOKER.

I am hoping some one has photos of the crew of this ship, from that time, in particular the stokers. Obviously I am hoping one contains my dad!. I know he was on her during her convoy duties of Pedestal, which I believe was in 1942, he may also have been aboard during engagement with Bismark. Any photos of ordinary seamen anything would be great.
sadly, Jack crossed the bar in Jan 2006, having spent his post war years being very proud of his connections with the Rodney. He was buried in his Rodney regalia!, blazer, badge, tie and tally., still a handsome sailor!!.

Being an ex-matelot I've decided to use a bit of the "front" for which we are supposed to be renowned and risk being accused of blatant advertising.

These days I am self-employed running a small garment embroidery business and, because of my RN and Sea Cadets connections, I do a lot of gear with Ship's Badges (Crests) on them. I do all the work myself and provided I have decent artwork can reproduce most of them - no minimum order, one-offs welcome. and click the Armed Forces link.

At the beginning of November, on this page, I asked if anyone could give me any help tracing crew (or family of) from HMS Queen Elizabeth from 1942.
I didn't get a single response! So....
I wrote to 'The Association' and the General Secretary confirmed that there is no old comrades group for the ship. But he has suggested that if I were to send him the pantomime programme, he will forward it to the brand new aircraft carrier of the same name when appropriate. A wonderful idea.
I intend to pass it on after Christmas just incase anyone reads my last entry with a positive answer.
Thanks for taking time to read my entries on this guestbook.
Merry Christmas one and all!
Regards
GSG

Guys,

well, i'm coming to the end of my tour here in Basra. The past 6 months have been an experience i will remember for the rest of my life. There have been ups and downs, mainly ups. It has given me the opportunity to work with the Army and RAF, possibly something i will never do again. I have seen things and been to places that i know i will never see again. But most of all, it has made me realise that even under massive amounts of pressure, the British Armed Forces remain professional and fully deserve the respect we are given.Which leads me onto you guys.

You are all aware that i've received dozens of parcels over the last few months and have distributed them to our guys here on the COB. I hope most of you have received letters or emails of thanks from the relevant receiver. If not, i can assure you all they were very well received. I have had no special requests for any particular items so i trust the contents were sufficient. Personally, i have found it quite humbling receiving these packages and handing them out. This proves to me that we are not the forgotten few and i would personally like to thank each and every one of you for your kind gesture. I have also found it a pleasure receiving emails from you all (apologies if i didn't get back to you, internet problems!) and seeing my couple of 'dits' published in magazines and on your websites. I also know of 2 lovely children that took a photo and an email in to school as part of a 'show and tell'. Its gestures like this from you all that make a deployment worthwhile. If there is anything at all that i can do for any of you, please ask me. I would be delighted to return the favour :-) . I am also partial to a drink or two, so if our paths ever cross, i will buy the first round ;-) I plan to go to Portsmouth around February time and i know i have one invite for a pint already :-) I believe there's a bottle of rum somewhere too, 'Charles and Diana' ;-)

Once again, many thanks to you all. I wish you all a very MERRY XMAS and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR. Please feel free to keep in touch.

Regards

Ian
