| Guys,
well, i'm coming to the end of my tour here in Basra. The past 6 months have been an experience i will remember for the rest of my life. There have been ups and downs, mainly ups. It has given me the opportunity to work with the Army and RAF, possibly something i will never do again. I have seen things and been to places that i know i will never see again. But most of all, it has made me realise that even under massive amounts of pressure, the British Armed Forces remain professional and fully deserve the respect we are given.Which leads me onto you guys.
You are all aware that i've received dozens of parcels over the last few months and have distributed them to our guys here on the COB. I hope most of you have received letters or emails of thanks from the relevant receiver. If not, i can assure you all they were very well received. I have had no special requests for any particular items so i trust the contents were sufficient. Personally, i have found it quite humbling receiving these packages and handing them out. This proves to me that we are not the forgotten few and i would personally like to thank each and every one of you for your kind gesture. I have also found it a pleasure receiving emails from you all (apologies if i didn't get back to you, internet problems!) and seeing my couple of 'dits' published in magazines and on your websites. I also know of 2 lovely children that took a photo and an email in to school as part of a 'show and tell'. Its gestures like this from you all that make a deployment worthwhile. If there is anything at all that i can do for any of you, please ask me. I would be delighted to return the favour :-) . I am also partial to a drink or two, so if our paths ever cross, i will buy the first round ;-) I plan to go to Portsmouth around February time and i know i have one invite for a pint already :-) I believe there's a bottle of rum somewhere too, 'Charles and Diana' ;-)
Once again, many thanks to you all. I wish you all a very MERRY XMAS and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR. Please feel free to keep in touch.
Regards
Ian

| ¡Hola Shipmates! Southern Spanish Almuñecar Branch checking in again. We have just held a brilliant traditional Pickle Night, probably the first one ever held in Spain. I’d love to tell you all about it but Pusser’s is only 9 quid a bottle, and and the beer and wine were free, so things are hazy! Some of the civvies had a bit of a problem with the 1 plate and 1 spoon, but all were satisfied! The Spanish restaurant owners were totally mystified by it all! Especially when they kept trying to take away the plate! We are going to have another formal Trafalgar Night dinner next year, last year’s was very good. If any RNA Members fancy a family holiday in the warm October sun, plus the chance to visit to Cape Trafalgar AND then a superb Trafalgar Night Dinner, please contact us on almunecarRNA (at) hotmail.com for initial details. We can probably drum up either hotel or self catering accommodation too! Also, if any Shipmates are coming out on holiday, we meet 2nd Tuesday of the month and would love to see you. | |

| Hello. I am researching HMS Balfour, 1943-45. My Grandad was a cook on board and i would really like to find out if anyone has any memories from this time.
I am particularly keen to hear if a passed down story about an accidental firing of the ships main gun in refit in Boston is true, (apparently the shell exploded in a cemetery - no complaints were heard though! ;)
Thanks, Duncan | |

| ¡Hola Shipmates! Southern Spanish Almuñecar Branch calling in. Last Sunday, having been invited by the Malaga Royal British Legion and the RAF Association, Almuñecar RNA Branch Members attended the service of Remembrance at The English Cemetery and St George’s Church in Malaga. This cemetery has 4 war graves, one of which is a Naval one. It is the final resting place of Commander (S) W D Stranack RN, who was lost from HMS MANCHESTER on July 7th 1941. Chairman Dave Toms laid a wreath, while his wife Heather gave a reading over the graves remembering fallen seafarers from all conflicts. We believe this is the story. Commander Stranack, although a Stores Officer, was embarked in HMS Manchester as a cryptologist, coding and decoding secret signals. He was working in the Communications Office when the ship was hit by an aerial torpedo and his body was tragically blown out of the hole in the ship’s side into the Mediterranean, where it was subsequently washed onto the beach near Malaga. Other members of the Ship’s Company who were killed in the action are interred in Gibraltar. We in the Almuñecar Branch would love to know more about this event. Any old Manchesters about? | |

| HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH
I am trying to find any crew member who was involved in a pantomime production 'Cinderlla Afloat' staged in Feb 1942. Information regarding Lieut. Kim Peacock, R.N.V.R would be particularly welcome. He is on a list of maybe fifty people who took part and he also wrote and produced the play.
The reason being, I have a hand made programme containing photographs of the characters and names of the backstage members. I understand the ship was under repairs at the time after a torpedo attack in Alexandria in the previous December. I would like to be able to pass this momento onto anyone who is mentioned in the booklet or any relations.
If someone can offer a name, I will gladly pass it on, only the list would be far too big to put on this page.
Alternatively, can anyone give a contact address of any know association to this ship? That would really be a huge help.
Someone, I'm sure would love to have this.
My thanks to anyone with information
Regards
G S G.
